Y'all Have A GREAT Summer!!! Well, this is it!!! It is time for relaxing, watching movies, country music, the lake, the pool, much more time with family and so many neglected tasks around the house. (and not in that order.)
I hope that you had a good semester, I hope that your Social Studies Knowledge (as well as reading comprehension skills, ugh!) increased as a result of this class, but, more importantly, I hope your knowledge of being an American has increased this semester. Have goals for your life and work to achieve those goals and you'll be fine!!! Thanks for this semester. Enjoy your Summer Break!!! Thanks, Coach Herrmann

If you don't owe me such an exam, we had a "Group Scavenger Hunt" where you have to navigate the upstairs and downstairs Academic and Tech Center hallways to look for 16 clues for a crossword puzzle. This is NOT GRADED, but it is the final chance to earn Herrmann Dollar$ for our class raffle. ZOO Field Trip (or Finish Tests/Make-Up Work?) Today, there were Senior Finals 1st/2nd. Today, there was a Field Trip to the Zoo. And then, there was an assembly. ;-)
I wanted to use this day to try to finish as many unfinished Exams as possible. I have some people that owe part or all of : Unit Three Exam (24 Content ?s + 8 ReadingComp ?s) Unit Four Exam (8 ReadingComp ?s only) Enduring Skills Post-Test (8 ReadingComp ?s + 1 Writing Prompt/Essay) If you're absent today, be sure that you know that you have to make these up sometime. If you don't, I will have to give you ZERO points for any missing items and that will hurt your grade. Enduring Skills POST-TEST Well, this is IT!!! (The LAST thing to do in our class -except for the Final Exam- that will count for a grade or for part of a grade!!!)
We took the "Enduring Skills Post-Test" today. It consists of 2 Reading Passages, 8 ACT-like ?s and 1 Writing Prompt/Essay. The Writing Prompt/Essay IS A 100 POINT EXAM GRADE BY ITSELF and the 8 ACT-like ReadingComp ?s are 20% OF 4 OTHER EXAM GRADES. Needless to say, this is important to your grade to make-up. EH Unit Four Exam (ReadingComp ONLY) Yesterday, I made a comment in class about the "Unit Four Exam - ReadingComp" and the "Enduring Skills Post-Test" being given on the next days available. Well, today was the first day available, so I have the "Unit Four Exam - ReadingComp" with 2 passages and 8 ACT-like ?s. There was A LOT of extra time left over, so I gave out a small slip that had your Unit Three Content Scores (3.1, 3.2, 3.3 & 3.4) for you along with your current overall grade. I also made the "Retake Ticket" and the "Boost Project" sheets available to begin that process. Have a GREAT WEEKEND!!! SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE!!! Unit Three Exam (Day 2 of 2) Today, we took the Unit Three Exam, Day #2 of 2.
Every student MUST finish the 8 ReadingComp Questions on DAY #2. However, there are a few students who were absent yesterday, so today is Day #1 for them. I also collected the "Portfolio" and I will start to grade those as soon as possible. Remember, after U3XM is over, I have 2 "Reading Comp" exams to take and due to a BUSY SCHEDULE filled with Rewards, Assemblies, Award Ceremonies, Field Trips, Different Schedules for Seniors, etc., etc., etc., I MUST TAKE THE FIRST CHANCE AVAILABLE TO COMPLETE THESE TWO "READING COMP EXAMS" UNIT 3 EXAM DAY 1 of 2... Today, we took the Unit Three Exam. Every student MUST finish the 24 Content M/C Questions on DAY #1. The other part of the U3XM (8 ACT-like ReadingComp Questions) could be finished on DAY #1 or on DAY #2.
I also gave out the "Portfolio Checklist" and I will start to grade those in class tomorrow or collect them tomorrow at the end of class. TOMORROW IS DAY #2. U3XM Study Guide Day (Data + Data + Quiz/Quiz/Trade ReVu) TOMORROW IS UNIT THREE EXAM!!! Today, we used our typical "Study Guide Day" to accomplish a few things. First, I reviewed two different sets of DATA with you: a-how you are doing on the ReadingComp questions so far... b-how you did on 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 & 3.4 FA/Quizzes... Second, we did a Quiz/Quiz/Trade game to review for the U3XM for tomorrow. Basically, we walked around the room and quizzed each other and traded cards. If it worked, you will have been asked about one-third of the questions. Since there is NO CHANCE that you will get all 27 questions in the Quiz/Quiz/Trade game, I made a paper copy of the 27 Questions, with the 27 answers on the back. I have also created a "FlashCards" version of the power point where the answers are immediately after the questions. I will include both .ppt and .pdf copies of those 27 ?s below. Third, I let you have the remainder of the time to work on your Unit Three Study Guide. Remember: TOMORROW IS UNIT THREE EXAM!!!
3.4d Eminent Domain Project Today, we took our final "Formative Assessment/Quiz" AND we are completing our FINAL "Portfolio" project. This one is worth 10 points and will bring the Portfolio total to 60 points. You need to have 50 of the 60 points on or around Exam day. ALSO, YOUR U3XM IS WEDNESDAY 05/10/17. PLEASE BE READY!!! THE LAST TIME YOU LEARNED ANYTHING NEW WAS LAST THURSDAY. First, we took a solo FA-Q and you would have written your answers on BOTH the mini-gradecam AND on your "Study Quiz. After all were finished, we reviewed the correct answers. If you were absent, your copy will be in the green folders. Please be sure to get the 11 correct answers so that you can STUDY for Wednesday's U3XM. Second, we were able to move into "Chosen Groups" and complete a 10 Point Portfolio Assignment where each group member had to choose 1 of the 4 "Points of View" regarding the Kelo v. New London, CT case and Eminent Domain. The four were: Homeowners Local Governments Big Businesses Average Americans (who were not part of the first 3 POV's). Each student could do a typical written/visual project on 8.5 x 11 paper or they could do something different, such as a comic strip, a Twitter Feud, a song or poem, etc. After that, we waited for the bell to ring!!!
3.4 Eminent Domain CORNELL NOTES Today was the 2nd day of the 3.4 LT. There will be 3 days for that LT!!! BE READY FOR THE UNIT THREE EXAM ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 2017!!! First, we started out by reviewing some of the answers from Tuesday (where you had to read 2 SC case summaries and fill in the usual Graphic Organizer). Next, we spent some time reviewing "How" to take notes and talked about a specific method called "Cornell Notes". There are some slides on the .ppt that refer to this method. Finally, we spent the rest of class using either the "Cornell Notes" method or the "Whatever Method" (up to you...) to take NOTES from the information on 6 different slides. For your convenience, I have used PINK HIGHLIGHT to let you know what you should know... (whether it is solid pink highlight or whether it has a pink circle around it...) HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!
3.4a Eminent Domain Listening Standard EXAMPLE + 3.4b 2 Eminent Domain SCOTUS CasesToday, we are starting our FINAL LT of the school year. 3.4 is about "Eminent Domain" and we did two things today: 1) We watched a pair of videos to try to "learn by listening" and then reviewed what we learned together in class 2) We read two Supreme Court case summaries and filled in a large Graphic Organizer.
ENGLISH 2 EOC DAY (make-up work?)I went over grades and several students worked on "Dear Senator Letters" and "Exam Retakes" and "Portfolio Items" from Unit Two and Unit Three Study Guide (which you all rec'd on Friday)
3.3e Due Process ORQ (100 Point Exam Grade) Today counts as a 100 Point EXAM GRADE!!! Today, we are going to do another writing assignment that helps you prepare for the ODW (On Demand Writing) exams. The activities for the entire week leading up to today should have prepared you with the content knowledge to write this Open Response Questions (ORQ). I had the class attempt to finish it in class today (since we are simulating the On-Demand Writing Assessment) but if it didn't get finished in class, I was allowing it to be finished over the weekend. (((PLEASE DO NOT assume that this allowance means that you could have chosen to do nothing and just written it later...))). To be clear: Yes, you were/are permitted to use the "3.3d Due Process Book" on this writing assignment. EH
3.3d DUE PROCESS BOOK (3.3d Our 5th , 6TH, 7TH & 8TH Amendment - Due Process Protections) DAY 2 of 2 Today is DAY TWO for the "3.3d Due Process Book" (15 POINT PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT) and you should finish today. If you do NOT finish, the .pdf file that has the WTP textbook pages in under YESTERDAY's Blog Post (Wednesday 04.26.17). Tomorrow, we will have a 100 POINT EXAM GRADE Writing Assignment called the "Due Process ORQ" (3.3e). You will have the entire class period to write it and you can use your completed Due Process Book to assist you.
3.3d DUE PROCESS BOOK (3.3d Our 5th , 6TH, 7TH & 8TH Amendment- Due Process Protections) Today, we are starting a 2 day activity to learn about 9 separate "Due Process" protections. It is called the "Due Process Book" and it is a large 11x17 sheet of paper with a lot of boxes. It is also A 15 POINT PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT. To achieve this, we watched another "Craig the Eagle Puncher" video, demonstrated how to fill in the Due Process Book, showed some examples and had you start. You should be able to get about 1/3 done today and the other 2/3 done tomorrow. This Due Process Book assignment is designed to help you with Friday's "Due Process ORQ", which will be this unit's 100 POINT WRITING ASSIGNMENT / EXAM GRADE.
3.3c 5th Amendment “Self-Incrimination” Protection After another Political Cartoon BellRinger ('cause Political Cartoons ARE AWESOME!!!), we used the BellRinger time to review the 9 "Exclusionary Rule" scenarios from yesterday. Next, we watched 2 videos, 1 funny and 1 informative. The funny one was Dave Chappelle and NO, he didn't cuss during this clip!!! The informative one was Hip Hughes talking about the 5th Amendment and we specifically watched JUST the Introduction and the "Self-Incrimination" parts of the video. Then there were 4 ?s from the Text about Self-Incrimination and we finished with a 10 POINT FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT PARAGRAPH WRITING ASSIGNMENT. This smaller writing grade was DUE TODAY, DUE TOMORROW FOR HOMEWORK or I will not accept it. Since you were absent, you can take 3 days to do it. After 3 days, forget it. The videos and the worksheet/writing prompt are in the .pdf file below. . EH
"Search & Seizure" 3.3a VIDEO/WTP Text Intro + 3.3b Bill of Rights Institute HANDOUT Today, we started a New LT (3.3 is about SEVERAL of the "Due Process" protections and it involves 5 of the 10 Amendments in the Bill of Rights. Yes, that IS HALF OF THEM!!!) Today, we are just looking at the 4th Amendment's "Search & Seizure" protections. We had a BellRinger that was a Political Cartoon about the Gov't "spying" on the citizens from a few years back. We watched 1 video and answered 5 ?s from the WTP text. Next, we worked with a partner to read about "Student" rights pertaining to Search & Seizure and finished with a chart where you had to evaluate 9 scenarios and decide if the "Exclusionary Rule" applied. EH
3.1&3.2 FA + 3.2e GUN RIGHTS vs. GUN CONTROL (Two POV Comic Strip!!!)We finished out our 3.2LT with a Formative Assessment / Quiz (Over BOTH 3.1 and 3.2). It had 13 ?s and we reviewed the answers immediately after all were done. The last class activity for LT 3.2 was the "Guns Rights & Gun Control 2 POV Comic Strip" (3.2e) where you had to read a resource (and could also use prior knowledge and your device, too) to create a creative way to demonstrate the 2 opposite Points of View (POV) within this debate/struggle. This was a 10 point portfolio assignment!!! EH
3.2d Evaluate 4 Proposals Today, we started out with a BellRinger of a POTENTIAL Supreme Court Case about Conceal & Carry Laws that could EXPAND the 2nd Amendment's protections. Keep your Eyes open for that this summer. The only real thing that we had to do today was to read another handout that is about the case D.C. v. Heller (2008) and to use that reading + our prior knowledge to decide with a partner whether 4 hypothetical laws would be ruled Constitutional or Unconstitutional if they were real laws and went to the courts. See the handout in the green folder or in the .pdf below.
